Circus Girl Skin Care

Skin care can be a real hassle while traveling. Maintaining a good skin care regimen is often nearly impossible whether we travel by land or air and is usually last on our list of “things to do”; especially since Circus Girls  are always “on-the-go”. Circus performers in general tend to wear heavy amounts of make-up which eventually takes its toll on skin causing premature aging and blemishes. Depending on your skin type some methods of make-up removal can be too harsh or not strong enough. For example: if you have oily skin, an oil-based make-up remover will most likely make your skin breakout even more than usual because oily+oily = way too oily! Instead, use a make-up remover that will dry out your skin a bit. Try a make-up remover that does not contain oils or moisturizers and use a toner. For those of us with normal to dry skin, using an oil-based make-up remover is fine but be sure to remove any excess oil because even dry skin can breakout. However, good skincare doesn’t simply begin & end at make-up removal,  it starts with what we put in our bodies and doesn’t need to be complex.

Here’s what I like to do:

My number one and most favorite thing to do to keep my skin looking healthy and youthful is to drink lots of water throughout the day and eating healthy. Believe it or not your skin relies heavily on what you eat & drink. Staying hydrated and eating healthy (steering clear of junk food as much as possible) is crucial to keeping your skin looking its best. Smoking, drug use, and alcohol use will age your face; that’s no lie!

(If you need proof, here’s a link of a picture I would rather not post on this article. Click here if you dare…)

While it’s lovely to look tanned, the sun has a profound effect over years of exposure on the skin, causing premature skin aging, skin cancer, and many other skin changes. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun accounts for most premature skin aging. Many skin changes that were commonly believed to be due to aging, such as easy bruising, are actually a result of prolonged exposure to the sun. So, try keeping tanning beds & sun exposure to a minimum. Always be sure to wear sunscreen and avoid getting sunburned.

Back to the make-up remover issue: I like to remove my make-up with Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes.  It’s quick, easy, and convenient, perfect for us Circus Gals  “on-the-go”. I can remove light to medium amounts of make-up with just one towelette and for heavy amounts of make-up, I use two: one for my face and one for my eyes (because I tend to go a bit “over the top” with my eye make-up and love using waterproof mascara). I have found these towelettes to be gentle enough around my eyes while successfully removing eyeliner, heavy eye shadow, and that stubborn waterproof mascara. The towelettes are also quite affordable and can be found almost anywhere for around $5 (USD) or online through websites like Amazon.com.

Unfortunately, most make-up removers simply cannot wipe your face clean like a good cleanser can so, for this, I highly recommend using the Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System.  Clarisonic’s patented micro-massage motion works within skin’s natural elasticity to gently remove the impurities that traditional cleansing methods leave behind – leaving skin softer, smoother and more beautiful. It cleanses 6x better than with your hands alone and it just takes 60 seconds! It has a built-in timer that will automatically shut off after 60 seconds of use (which is extremely helpful when trying to keep track of time). The Mia works with  your skin not against it to gently massage away any impurities trapped within your pores, preparing skin for better absorption of creams, serums and moisturizers. It’s also gentle enough to use twice a day. It’s mainly designed for those with normal to oily skin types but I recommend it to anyone who just want to get the gunk out of their pores.

To reiterate: I eat well, drink lots of water to stay hydrated, always wear sunscreen when sunbathing, and cleanse my face daily. First, I wipe my face with a Neutrogena towelette, then I rinse my face with warm water (to open up my pores) and apply just a dab of the cleanser that comes with the Clarisonic Mia. I use the Clarisonic Mia all over my face, in circular motions, for only 60 seconds… and I’m done! My face looks & feels amazing! It’s the best product I’ve used so far and it really works! My forehead was my “trouble spot” and I was having the hardest time trying to regulate it. I noticed a difference after the very first use and by the end of two weeks (of using it only once a day) my skin completely cleared up and is now smoothed and controlled. The Mia is compact as well and the cleanser that comes with it is a small tube that makes it very easy to take with you on an airplane. It’s a “must have” for us hardworking, traveling Circus Gals. ■
